On Friday 9/6, for Facebook post consider insulting to the royal family a Thai man had to serve a jail sentence of 35 years. This was by far the strictest sentences given down for a crime that segregates Thailand’s ultra-rich monarchy from condemnation.

For uploading photos and videos of the royal family on a Facebook account that alleged to belong to a different user the 34-year-old was sentence to 10 counts of lese majeste by Bangkok military court .

 

In order to prevent his relatives from being outcast Wichai last name was held back was suspect of using the account to insult a former acquaintance, said iLaw, a group that trails royal insult cases.

“The court penalised him with seven years per count. Altogether he was given 70 years, but it was condensed in half because he own up,” said Yingcheep Atchanont from iLaw.
